The business process outsourcing (BPO) division of Wipro Technologies will provide legal process outsourcing (LPO) to Microsofts intellectual property (IP) and licensing group worldwide, says the Indian IT bellwether. "We have developed IP domain expertise and ability to work on a scale required for Microsofts vast IP portfolio. We are also jointly developing processes and case management to streamline IP processes," Wipro general manger for LPO solutions Saju A. Joseph said in a statement.

IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has inked a multi-year outsourcing contract with Telenor Norway.The contract comprises IT application maintenance and development services and will involve a modernisation of Telenors Norways application portfolio across its fixed, mobile, datawarehouse and accounting system domains, a release said here.Through this second generation outsourcing initiative, Telenor Norway will improve its operational efficiency, refresh its IT stack and will become more agile to respond to its customers changing needs, it said.

The Indian information technology sector is likely to witness heavy consolidation in the coming months as mid-size companies struggle to sustain growth amid a rising anti-outsourcing tirade in the United States. "We expect many mergers and takeovers in the IT sector. It will be among Indian companies and also overseas deals. This is very important for mid-size companies," P.N. Sudarshan, senior director at global consulting firm Deloitte Touche, told media in an interview. He said the focus of Indian outsourcing companies in the coming months will be on Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Infosys Technologies is set to expand its back office operations in Poland in the next two years to offer business process outsourcing (BPO) services to more European and global clients, a senior official of the IT bellwether said.
"We will ramp up our headcount to 1,500 people by 2012 from about 1,000 this year at our Lodz BPO facility in Poland to serve at least 20 clients across verticals in Europe and American markets," Infosys BPO Poland Sp vice-president Krystian Bestry said.

GROHE, the leading international manufacturer of sanitary fittings, and Capgemini, one of the worlds foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services, have signed an agreement for IT infrastructure outsourcing. The multi-million Euro contract between GROHE AG and Capgemini Outsourcing Services GmbH spans a period of five years, and means that some 20 employees of GROHE will transfer to Capgemini. The future services will cover GROHE sites in Brazil, Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Portugal, Singapore and Thailand, for which Capgemini will leverage its global RightshoreB. network consisting of onshore, nearshore and offshore centres.

In a significant announcement, the Big Blue has bagged a major 10 year contract for managing Jet Airways IT. IBM has significant presence in India, with around 14 offices in different cities across the country. According to IBM, the Rs. 285 crore (USD 62 Million) deal is a first of its kind in Indian aviation. As part of the agreement, IBM will be managing the IT infrastructure.

The National Australia Bank NAB has reportedly decided to outsource nearly 400 new jobs to India by the year end. The Bank has commenced its second round of its IT outsourcing program ITO Wave Two, and over the next phase, the Bank would examine offshoring up to 148 jobs from its Technology Banking, Australia TBA and Technology MLC divisions.The review will encompass TBAs three Melbournebased teams overseeing business and retail payments, Siebel and accounts services, and MLCs Sydneybased mainframe team.

Indian services provider HCL has signed a seven year agreement with Saudi Arabias Al Majdouie Group (AMG) for IT outsourcing. The vendor claims that its the one of the largest deals it has struck in the Kingdom with an estimated value of more than USD 10 million. The agreement also marks the first time that that AMG has worked with an outsourcing provider. Under the terms of the deal, HCL will assist AMG with what it terms a transformational engagement, in which it will help create new infrastructure including a new datacentre and disaster recovery centre. AMG will also implement more than 70 modules of Oracle e-business suite, a initiative which HCL is already the terming single largest implementation of Oracle in terms of breadth of implementation across the region. In addition, HCL will also be managing AMGs service desks, which entails supporting more than 1500 users in 100 different locations.

Indias top mobile phone firm Bharti Airtel took the initial steps to replicate its hugely successful outsourcing model in Africa by awarding a 1.5-billion contract to IBM for managing its IT requirements across 16 countries in the continent. The 10-year deal will involve IBM consolidating Airtels IT operations in Africa into one integrated system. The US firm also handles Bhartis information technology requirements in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh under a 2004 deal, which is estimated to worth at least 3 billion.

The country's lead tech player Tata Consultancy Services has acquired Super-Valu Services India, the captive unit of Minneapolis-based grocery retailer SuperValu Inc.As per a multi-year deal, valued over $100 million, over 600 associates of SuperValu working in Bangalore will now become part of TCS. The integration procedure is expected to be completed within a month.

The Dutch bank agreed a five year EUR1.8 billion combined deal with the three firms and Accenture and Patni Computer Systems in 2005, in a bid to make annual savings of EUR 258 million from 2007. IBM won the lion's share of the contract, getting around EUR1.5 billion to maintain ABN Amro's global IT infrastructure - including servers, storage systems, data centres and desktops. Infosys Technologies and TCS assumed responsibility for maintaining and supporting software applications. Now the bank , which was nationalised in the wake of the global economic crisis - is set to renew with three of the original five vendors, says the ET.
