Top Indian IT companies like TCS, Infosys and Wipro will have to shift focus on long-term outsourcing in order to make significant gains in the European market, says IT analysts. These three companies derive around 25 percent of their revenue from European market.

MindTree Ltd, a global IT Solutions Company, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Kyocera Wireless Corp. (KWC) to acquire Kyocera Wireless (India) Pvt. Ltd., its Indian subsidiary. The acquisition is subject to legal and statutory requirements, as well as certain closing conditions. Established in 2003, Kyocera Wireless (India) Pvt. Ltd. is engaged in wireless product development, software engineering, and product testing for KWC's global product portfolio, as well as development of custom wireless handsets for Indian service providers.

Patni Computer Systems, which battles bigger Indian tech peers for large outsourcing contracts, has identified two acquisition targets one each in the US and continental Europe - and plans to close at least one transaction by November this year. Multiple sources familiar with Patnib s acquisition plans said the company wants to cross the $1-billion mark in revenues through inorganic growth, and compete more effectively with TCS, Infosys and Wipro for large multi-year outsourcing contracts.

Tata Consultancy Services TCS, has secured a five-year project to build and operate a State Wide Area Network SWAN in Andhra Pradesh. The project will be based on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer BOOT model. This is the fourth SWAN project TCS has bagged in a row. Wipro, an outsourcing firm also announced that it had won a three-year IT services contract from Aquarion Water Company, one of the largest water utilities in the U.S.

Leading IT multinational IBM, which already has three large telecom outsourcing contracts, has bagged an estimated USD200 million outsourcing contract from Videocon group-led telecom operator Datacom Solutions. The multinational firm pipped Hewlett Packard and Tech Mahindra to bag the contract, according to at least three officials familiar with the deal. The contract is likely to be signed very soon.

IBM India, a local unit of International Business Machines Corp , said on 1 June that it has received an information technology contract from MTS India, the mobile telephone services arm of Shyam Sistema TeleServices Ltd, or SSTL. The company said that under the agreement it will design and build two data centres, one in Chennai and the other in Gurgaon, intended to support SSTLs plans to expand its pan-Indian telephony services. SSTL, a 74:26 joint venture between Russias Sistema JSFC and Indias Shyam Group, entered a tie-up with Russias Mobile TeleSystems to launch mobile services under the MTS brand in India.

Accenture is in discussions with top Indian phone firms including Bharti Airtel for strategic outsourcing of new business processes apart from management consulting projects, as these telcos seek to sustain profitability and outsource non core functions. Experts who did not wish to be identified said these consulting and strategic outsourcing contracts could be smaller, estimated anywhere between USD50 million to USD200 million, but will bring high margin business for Accenture.

Qantas and IBM have entered into a seven-year outsourcing deal that could be worth as much as AUD200 million - and save Qantas up to 180 jobs. The deal relates to the Qantas project delivery team and all employees affected will be offered the chance to migrate to IBM, the company said yesterday. But those who elect not to go will be made redundant with no prospect of employment elsewhere in the Qantas group, it emerged.

Mid-sized software services firm MindTree will be making foray into China, having bagged a significant outsourcing contract from Chinab s biggest telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies. For the Bangalore-headquartered company, China marks new geography entry, besides already having presence in US and Europe. This project has different phases and has potential to become large. The contract also allows us to move up the value chain as China has emerged a big growth market.

Indiab s largest information technology IT services firm, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd TCS, expects to see more gains from consolidation of IT deals following global mergers and as companies curb technology costs and move work offshore to low-cost countries, a top executive said. In August, TCS was among three Indian IT vendors that won a part of a USD1.5 billion Rs7,320 crore outsourcing contract from British oil firm BP Plc, which cut its total vendor base to five from 40. Infosys Technologies Ltd, Wipro Ltd, IBM Corp. and Accenture Ltd were the other vendors.

Etisalat DB Telecom, the Indian unit of UAEs Etisalat, has entered into an agreement with Tech Mahindra Ltd for outsourcing information technology applications valued at USD400 million, in over 10 years, the telecom firm said.The outsourcing deal would include implementation of end-to-end IT applications and infrastructure, system integration and managed services, including components in Business Support System BSS and Operating Support System OSS domain, Etisalat DB Telecom said in a release.
