Harman inks outsourcing deal

Wipro Ltd., Indias thirdlargest IT services provider, has set up an embedded engineering centre for USbased Harman International Industries Inc., to jointly develop products and technologies for automotive, consumer and professional markets. As a part of the contract, Wipro will set up a dedicated engineering centre which will work on existing and future projects of Harman in the infotainment space.

Outsourcing centre from Virtusa

IT services major Virtusa Corporation, which has a presence in IT consulting, technology and outsourcing services, has chalked out plans for a bigger presence in India, eyeing a share of the estimated total domestic IT spend of $ 8.3 billion in 2009. Virtusa vice president and India centre head Y K Murthy told that a new strategic business unit had been established to target business in the subcontinent. We will now be entering the domestic market from the business point of view, in addition to the global delivery centre operations that we have had here, he said.

Outsourcing contracts won by Indian companies

Even in a recession hit market where clients are cutting outsourcing budgets, Indian firms such as TCS, Infy, Wipro, HCL and Tata Communications have won large outsourcing deals this year placing them among the top 10 global service providers , on contract value terms. Even though the total contract value of awarded outsourcing deals fell by 22 percent to USD40.2 billion in the first six months of this year, Indian tech firms continued to compete neck and neck with the global biggies such as IBM, Accenture, HP/EDS, CSC, shows data from TPI. TPI is the largest sourcing data and advisory firm and measures commercial outsourcing contracts valued at USD25 million or more.

Infosys gets Telstra outsourcing contract

Infosys Technologies, Indias secondtolargest software firm by sales, has won an outsourcing contract worth about USD80 to 100 million from Australian phone firm Telstra. The Australian phone firm had undertaken a vendor consolidation exercise to reduce its IT service providers from four toto EDS, IBM, Infosys and Satyam toto to two. The consolidation was aimed at bringing down the cost of managing its IT systems. The Australian telecom major plans to bring down the number of IT systems from about 1,350 now to almost 300 by 2010.

India remains preferred destination for R&D outsourcing

India is the top choice for companies looking to outsource R and D with an offshoring business there expected to grow 23 percent to USD21 billion by 2012 and a talent pool in its largest hub, Bangalore second only to Silicon Valley, according to a study by a management consulting firm. The number of outsourced R and D centers in India has leapt from 180 in 2000 to 594 this year, according to the first report on Indias R and D centers from Zinnov . The huge talent pool in India has been fueling that growth, Zinnov said in its report.

IBM gets outsourcing contract

IBM has said that it has signed a 10year agreement to provide a range of tech services to Kurmanchal Nagar Sahakari Bank, one of Indias leading cooperative financial institutions. Financial terms were not disclosed. Under the contract, IBM will provide Kurmanchal Bank with a variety of IT services, including infrastructure hosting and management, disaster recovery services, and network maintenance. IBM will provide the hosting services from its data center facilities in Bangalore and backup services from Nainatal.

Infosys wins eBiz project

Infosys Technologies announced on Tuesday that it had been awarded an eBiz project by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The project is among the 27 Central, State and integrated mission mode projects (MMPs) under the National E-Governance Plan (NEGP) of the Government. The agreement envisages designing and development of the eBiz platform. It also includes building the support IT infrastructure, and implementing, maintaining and expanding the eBiz solution and services for the next ten years.

HCL Axon extends presence

HCL Technologies business transformation consultancy HCL Axon, the worlds largest SAP implementation service provider, has acquired South Africas top retail industry-focused software solutions provider UCS Groups enterprise solutions SAP practice. The effective date of this transaction is 1st August 2009. Axon is paying an initial USD7.7 million in cash and performance-related payments over the next two years for meeting revenue targets, that could take the acquisition cost to USD18.5 million. The UCS Group is a group of IT businesses focused on the manufacturing of software and the provision of software solutions and outsourcing services in the retail market and other niche markets. Customers include the leading apparel, furniture, fuel / forecourt, food and speciality retailers and quick service restaurants. In September 2008 HCL put in a counter bid to acquire British consulting firm Axon Group, with USD785-million bid, that edged out Indian rival Infosys USD753 million offer, edging out Infosys to boost its own enterprise-software capabilities. HCL integrated Axon with its enterprise-software business. After resisting HCL Technologies advances for the last two years, Axon finally agreed to the bid by HCL, rejecting Infosys offer of USD753.1 million. The acquisition will strengthened HCL Axons SAP capabilities with best-in-class SAP retail industry solutions (IS), will bring proven competency in IS retail and further increase the global delivery capabilities, including a significant boost to the companys market presence in South Africa.

Infosys wins outsourcing contract

Intel, the worldbs biggest chipmaker, has awarded a pilot outsourcing contract to Infosys Technologies worth USD10 million currently, which Top Indian outsourcing cos could evolve into a USD100-million engagement for Indiabs second biggest software exporter that is seeking to grow its revenues from customers such as BP (British Petroleum ), Intel and Telstra. Intel is not alone in pursuing outsourcing contracts with Indian offshore companies. In April this year, worldbs biggest software firm Microsoft announced a five-year, USD170-million outsourcing contract with HCL Technologies for supporting its online services business.

Indian LPO shines

Bad times for some American companies is turning into good times for Indian legal offshoring industry. IT services contract for IBM

IBM on Wednesday has landed a 10-year pay-as-you-go IT services agreement with Delhi Stock Exchange worth about US$9.2 million.The stock exchange closed shop in 2002 due to low trading volumes. The IBM deal is expected to help the exchange meet strict requirements set out by the Securities and Exchange Board of India before it can resume operations, according to The Hindu Business Line. IBM will provide business continuity and disaster-recovery services and will remotely host and manage the exchange's IT infrastructure.

IBM has signed a 10-year information technology (IT) outsourcing agreement with Innovation Auto Risk, an established leader in the Indian market providing claims management services and other related solutions to insurers & fleet management companies. HCL bags deal

HCL Technologies on Tuesday bagged a five-year IT applications support and infrastructure management deal from US-based beverages firm Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS). While the IT firm didnbt disclose the deal size, HCL America president Shami Khorana said the DPS deal marked the fourth largest outsourcing contract won by HCL in the US this year. The Indian IT firm had earlier bagged a USD350-million contract from The Readerbs Digest Association, a USD100-million deal from Xerox and recently, a deal with MTV Networks.

Nissan to outsource multi million contract

Japans third-biggest automaker Nissan has invited outsourcing companies including TCS, Wipro, IBM and Mahindra Satyam to bid for an application development and maintenance deal, potentially worth around USD250 million. Nissan, which currently works with Mahindra Satyam, among several other vendors, is among the other Japanese companies such as Sony and Toyota, who are seeking to reduce their operational costs by outsourcing IT and back-office projects to India.

Indian IT companies acquire US firms

Indian companies made 143 acquisitions across various sectors in the United States over the last two years, bailed out many companies on the brink of closure and created some 30,000 jobs, according to a seminal new study. In 2007-08 alone, 94 deals between the range of $0.8 million and $1,005 million were concluded with the disclosed value in 55 deals totalling $4,432 million, according to the joint study released by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Ernst and Young.

Indian R&D offshoring shines

Patni looking at expansion

Patni Computer and MphasiS are among the potential suitors looking to acquire the Indian software unit of troubled insurance giant AIG, said a banking source familiar with the development. The software unit, AIG Systems Solutions, is on the block as part of the insurance behemoths plans to divest assets globally and focus on its core business. Deloitte is running a sale process for the unit, which has over 1,000 employees and annualised business estimated at USD 30 million. The sevenyear-old AIGSS has centres in Chennai and Kolkata. The deal-making is still in preliminary stages.
