Even as large global corporations transition to the second wave of outsourcing, the technology sector is heading towards the Third Wave in the making, according to The Hackett Group. Infosys Technologies and IBM are locked in a battle to acquire the Indian IT captive unit of the worlds largest mutual fund company,Fidelity Investments. The deal may involve USD 150 to USD 180 mn upfront transaction in return for an assured multiyear outsourcing contract, at least two people involved with the matter said.

India is the top choice for companies looking to outsource R and D with an offshoring business there expected to grow 23 percent to USD21 billion by 2012 and a talent pool in its largest hub, Bangalore second only to Silicon Valley, according to a study by a management consulting firm. The number of outsourced R and D centers in India has leapt from 180 in 2000 to 594 this year, according to the first report on Indias R and D centers from Zinnov . The huge talent pool in India has been fueling that growth, Zinnov said in its report.

The National Australia Bank NAB has reportedly decided to outsource nearly 400 new jobs to India by the year end. On Monday the Bank commenced its second round of its IT outsourcing program ITO Wave Two, and over the next 68 weeks the Bank would examine offshoring up to 148 jobs from its Technology Banking, Australia TBA and Technology MLC divisions.The review will encompass TBAs three Melbournebased teams overseeing business and retail payments, Siebel and accounts services, and MLCs Sydneybased mainframe team, reported The Australian.

Riding on the growth in retail, and media and entertainment verticals, countrys largest IT services exporter Tata Consultancy Services on Thursday said its net profit rose by 2.67 per cent in the third quarter this fiscal amid difficult economic environment.The company reported a net profit of Rs 1,362 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2008, against Rs 1,326.67 crore in the same period last year.

Indian technology companies that write part or all of the code that goes into products of independent software vendors, or ISVs, such as Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp., will see their earnings increase from such clients as they gear up to sell software on a payasyouuse basis under the software as a service, or SaaS, model. These companies are also known as outsourced production development, or OPD, firms. Driven by demand from end users, ISVs such as Microsoft and Oracle are adopting SaaS to tap a broader market and add to sales of licensed software installed in customers computers. SaaS , where products are delivered online, allows vendors to sell software through monthly subscriptions that are usually cheaper than licence fees.

Indian It companies which derives a major portion of its revenues from North America and Europe, sees major opportunities in the Indian market on the back of significant IT services contracts coming from companies in verticals such as insurance, financial services and manufacturing. The Nasdaqlisted companys president and managing director R Chandrasekaran said the India focus isnt a derisking strategy or an effort to drive up its offshore utilisation rate. But, that, it is part of a broader strategy to focus on emerging markets, which currently accounts for less than 5 percent of its revenues.
