Large UK outsourcing deals chase India

Just few weeks after TCS won a contract from the UKs Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission CMEC, another stateowned organisation Transport for London TFL is seeking vendors for an outsourcing contract worth around USD 100 million, as the countrys transport organisation seeks to consolidate its information technology helpdesk and serve around 30,000 of its staffs better. The contract is the second in a series of deals worth around USD23 billion being pursued by offshore service providers, including TCS, Infosys and Wipro from the UKs state owned departments. The UK aims to save almost USD 10.6 billion annually by lowering costs of back office and IT operations across its stateowned departments, and outsourcing could help the country achieve these savings, according to experts.

US still offshores to India

As the Obama government gets ready to raise a protectionist wall against offshoring, the US firms seem to be shipping more jobs to India.The US firms have offshored 22,000 green technology jobs to India since January 1, 2009, Doug Brown, co-author of the influential 2009 Green Outsourcing Report, informed TNIE. We see the green job offshoring trend increasing as the US and the UK outsourcing buyers are seeking lower cost in labour and energy consumption. There are few suppliers who match credentials and outcomes of Indian firms, he said.

TCS looking at local market

The tough economic climate overseas is making Indian IT companies look homewards. Joining the trend, India's largest software exporter Tata Consultancy Services TCS is eyeing to double its India revenues to a billion dollars over the next three to four years. Witnessing a double digit growth, the company earned about USD500 million from the domestic market in fiscal 2009. This was 8.2 per cent of its total revenue.

Asia Pacific strong for outsourcing

With business from the US and Europe expected to decrease due to the ongoing financial turmoil, Indian information technology services IT firms are increasing their focus on the Asia Pacific region, particularly China, in an effort to tap the latters IT market and use it as a strategic base to enter the at least USD100 billion Rs4.76 trillion a year Japanese IT market. Business from the US and Europe together account for between 80 percent and 95 percent of revenues of the top five Indian IT services firms, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd or TCS, Infosys Technologies Ltd, Wipro Ltd, Satyam Computer Services Ltd and HCL Technologies Ltd.

Wipros outsourcing business rises

Wipro, the nations third largest software exporter announced on Wednesday a rise of 14.80percent on year-on-year (y-o-y) basis in consolidated earnings for the quarter ended March, 2009. On sequential basis, the company registered a drop of 2.51percent in consolidated profit over the quarter.

Outsourcing deal for IBM

IBM has said that it has signed a 10year agreement to provide a range of tech services to Kurmanchal Nagar Sahakari Bank, one of India's leading cooperative financial institutions. Financial terms were not disclosed. Under the contract, IBM will provide Kurmanchal Bank with a variety of IT services, including infrastructure hosting and management, disaster recovery services, and network maintenance. IBM will provide the hosting services from its data center facilities in Bangalore and backup services from Nainatal.
