The slow down is changing the dynamics of software delivery as it sharpens the focus on reducing costs, and driving higher value for some others. From a bilateral offshoring model, companies are moving towards evaluating different attributes of a location, depending on what their IT and business needs are. For some firms, the need is to cut costs, while for others it is to transform their business, Gartner vicepresident, research, Ian Mariott says. Mariott has been associated with IT services industry for a long period. Organisations will be thinking carefully about which countries they should source from. Some who always chase low costs may opt for Vietnam. This is a sensible move if they are not risk averse, Mr Mariott said.

Egypt is the latest in a long line of countries to set up a government agency to sell its IT services to businesses overseas.Countries such as the Philippines, Russia and Kenya have sent out similar delegations, envious of the spectacular overhaul of Indias economy in the past 10 years, led by technology investment.Amin Khaireldin, a board member of Egypts Information Technology Industry Development Agency, said the country has learned from Indias example.

Satyam Computer Services intends to decrease the US component of revenues by riding on the growth momentum in geographies such as India, West Asia and Australia. The Hyderabad based company is working on a plan to have a 50:50 mix, wherein revenues from the US would contribute 50 per cent to the companys topline from the current 60 per cent, according to Ram Mynampati, President, Commercial and Healthcare, Satyam Computer Services.

BT is to spend more than GBP1bn over the next five years with Tech Mahindra, the specialist Indian telecommunications outsourcing company in which BT plc has a minority interest.The latest deal, for GBP350m over five years, is for a system and processes transformation programme. This is the third multimillion pound deal in 18 months that Tech Mahindra has won from BT Group and brings its total BTrelated business to more than GBP1bn.

Indian IT giant Wipro is set to create hundreds of new jobs in the UK by taking advantage of government tax breaks and opening a lowcost regional software development facility outside of London and the South East. Bangalore based Wipro is evaluating several regions for its next delivery centre including Birmingham, Cranfield, Edinburgh, Manchester and Warwick. Its existing UK headquarters in Reading currently employs 300 people with room for 500. When this is filled the plan is to open a new office probably in the next one to two years which will also have room for 500 staff.

The National Australia Bank NAB has reportedly decided to outsource nearly 400 new jobs to India by the year end. On Monday the Bank commenced its second round of its IT outsourcing program ITO Wave Two, and over the next 68 weeks the Bank would examine offshoring up to 148 jobs from its Technology Banking, Australia TBA and Technology MLC divisions.The review will encompass TBAs three Melbournebased teams overseeing business and retail payments, Siebel and accounts services, and MLCs Sydneybased mainframe team, reported The Australian.

NXP, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, has awarded a five-year outsourcing contract to international IT services company Atos Origin. Under the contract Atos Origin will deliver global datacenter management services. This contract follows a business application hosting and datacenter services agreement signed last month. Together the contracts are worth E155 million. At the same time Atos Origin is selected as NXPs managed service integrator, responsible for managing its local and global IT suppliers. This agreement will result in increased flexibility, reliability, and cost savings for NXP using datacenter consolidation, global sourcing, best practice implementation and innovation.

Managing computer servers, networks and desktops remotely from locations such as India will be the next big business to emerge in offshore tech services, industry experts say, and companies such as HCL Comnet Systems and Services Ltd, Satyam Computer Services Ltd and Wipro Ltd are gearing up to address this market, projected to reach at least at USD13 billion Rs 55,770 crore today by 2013.
