Indias Infosys Technologies Ltd said it has got a multiyear, multimillion dollar global services deal from AstraZeneca Plc. Under the deal agreement, Infosys will deliver complete application maintenance services to the drug firms global operations in areas such as manufacturing, supply chain, finance, human resources and other corporate functions, it said in a statement.

The India based captive IT provider, which provides technology services and solutions to Citi entities worldwide, was purchased for approximately USD127 million. The two companies are slated to sign a master services contract for the delivery of technology infrastructure services TIS and application development and maintenance ADM services for six years. In addition, the agreement will stipulate the delivery of at least USD500 million in service revenues over the contract period.

IBM has inked a fiveyear IT outsourcing agreement with Madhav Nagrik Sahakari, one of the leading cooperative banks in the Indian state of Rajasthan. As part of the deal, IBM is providing server and storage services, networking services, hardware and storage management software. IBM will host the entire clients IT infrastructure out of its datacentre in Bangalore, said Goldie Srivastava of IBM.

India based outsourcing company Annik has opened an operation in Shanghai, to service clients in Japan, China and Korea with local language support capabilities. The firm provides support for a number of western European languages from its centre in India, and says the Shanghai center adds Japanese, Mandarin and Korean, as well as giving it an established footprint in key markets where it expects growth.

With rapid growth in demand for data storage capacity, which is expected to double by 2012, India will emerge as the hub for data centre hosting for West Asia, South East Asia and East Africa, predicts Gartner. The demand being largely from sectors like financial institutions, telecom operators, manufacturing and services According to the Gartner, the captive and hosted capacity of India will take a big leap from 1.1.337 million square feet in 2007 to 5.143 million square feet till 2012. The report states that storage demand in India is increasing significantly, where it was one pentabyte in 2001, it has soured to 34 pentabytes by 2007, leading to growing data centre uptake in enterprises.

Accenture is in discussions with top Indian phone firms including Bharti Airtel for strategic outsourcing of new business processes apart from management consulting projects, as these telcos seek to sustain profitability and outsource non core functions. Experts who did not wish to be identified said these consulting and strategic outsourcing contracts could be smaller, estimated anywhere between USD50 million to USD200 million, but will bring high margin business for Accenture.

While the IT biggies are putting constraints on their IT spending, Indian IT giant Infosys has plans of strengthening its R andD facilities to win bigger transformation deals. With its R andD capabilities, Infosys is able to mine large customers, such as British Telecom BT , better than other Indian rivals, said the expert, who is an independent consultant helping tech spenders in the U.S. to plan their outsourcing strategy.
