BPO service provider Firstsource Solutions has bagged a five-year outsourcing deal worth Rs 145 crore from Idea Cellular. This will be for providing customer management and billing services in Ideas Kerala and Tamil Nadu circles. Firstsource will provide a suite of customer management interaction services, including billing, new product information, and plan detail-related interaction services to Idea from its centre in Coimbatore, Mumbai-based Firstsource said.

Animation and gaming are seen as the next wave in Indias successful outsourcing story. However, there is a major change, this is a sector which has moved up from outsourcing to co production, a move up the value chain from low end, less creative work to higher creativity and advanced technologies, says Krayon Pictures director Namrata Sharma. She said that for India to catch the animation bus, it needed to quickly provide the required manpower since Nasscom had projected that both animation and gaming were multi billion dollar opportunities for India. The usual block, however, is the lack of trained manpower.

Switzerland-based financial services provider UBS is reportedly selling its business process outsourcing and knowledge process outsourcing units. And is said to be in talks with Indian offshoring giants Infosys Technologies Limited and Wipro Limited . The UBS Indian Service Center and UBS Krakow centre has an estimated value of $200 million.

Indias domestic Business Process Outsourcing [BPO] market has grown at a rate of 50 percent over last five years and has reached USD1.6 billion revenue in 2008. It has grown faster than the export BPO even though it is smaller than USD11 billion BPO export market according to a survey done by Ernst and Young. Outsourcing is not new to India. Large format Indian retailers and domestic telecom service providers are increasing their spend on market research and analytical work. India is becoming a hot destination for outsourced e publishing work since the countrys firms are charging a sixth of the prices prevailing in the West, an seminar organised by Confederation of Indian Industry CII has found. According to A.T. Kearneyb s Global Services Location Index (GSLI), a ranking of the 50 leading outsourcing destinations, Northern Irelandb s capital city Belfast was used as a cost/quality benchmark for the United Kingdom, has been ranked 31st for the 2009 survey. The region also helped United Kingdom move up from its 42nd place in 2008 survey. The survey focused on criteria like: financial attractiveness, people and skills availability, and business environment. Interesting Belfast ranked ahead of traditional low-cost European destinations like Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia.

Aegis, the Essar Groups BPO arm, on Monday announced setting up of an independent technology subsidiary called Aegis Tech. The group plans to invest USD100 million over the next 12 months in this subsidiary. We have a lot of requests from our BPO clients to manage their IT infrastructure. 3i Infotech, in which the ICICI group holds 39%, has announced a wholly-owned subsidiary for domestic BPO in effect making it a competitor to Firstsource Solutions, in which the ICICI group owns 26.7%. While 3i Infotech started offering BPO services a few years ago, the launch of a separate arm positions it as a BPO player and also gives its BPO business a bigger thrust.

The report, titled "The 2009 AT Kearney Global Services Location Index," ranked countries for their ability to handle business process outsourcing, using a weighted combination of scores on 43 measurements grouped under three main criteria: financial attractiveness; people skills and availability; and business environment.While India led the rankings globally, Ghana had the top overall ranking in sub-Saharan Africa, though in terms of actual BPO revenue, South Africa is still the continent's leader. Ghana's rank was boosted by financial issues.
