This means, a lot of back ground work for the numerous patents that are being filed by other countries, are being done out of India. Experts say, patent services outsourcing, the high value work of legal process outsourcing LPO has been a fairly new phenomenon here, hardly four to six years old. According to estimates last year, more than 1.8 million patent applications were filed worldwide.

Large format Indian retailers and domestic telecom service providers are increasing their spend on market research and analytical work. It was disclosed by Palanivel Kuppusamy, Executive Chairman, Dexterity Group, a Chennai based KPO firm in the Market Research space, who has recently done some pilot projects for the state owned telecom major BSNL on defaulting customers and impact of large retail stores on nearby mom and pop shop owners and other business establishments.

Delhi based law firm Singh and Associates is on the cusp on launching Indias largest Legal Process Outsouring outfit LPO. In what is believed to be a first in the Indian legal sector, the firm has paired with Cosmos Infra Engineering India Pvt. Ltd to start an LPO operation with 500 staff in Dwarka, New Delhi. Manoj K Singh, managing partner of Singh and Associates, said that the decision to get into the LPO sector was influenced as much by the size of the industry as it was by the increasing importance it is assuming in the current global economic downturn.

Contech BPO Services Pvt Ltd, an Ahmedabad based BPO company, has announced plans to expand its back office operations in music and other niche areas, saying it is set to digitise music from the West. Rajan Vasa, Managing Director and CEO, told presspersons that in the US, the size of music market is between USD 20 billion and USD 30 billion per annum and hundreds of thousands of songs in the inventory of various American music companies remain to be digitised. Of these, only about 20,000 have been digitised so far.

Animation and gaming are seen as the next wave in Indias successful outsourcing story. However, there is a major change, this is a sector which has moved up from outsourcing to co production, a move up the value chain from low end, less creative work to higher creativity and advanced technologies, says Krayon Pictures director Namrata Sharma. She said that for India to catch the animation bus, it needed to quickly provide the required manpower since Nasscom had projected that both animation and gaming were multi billion dollar opportunities for India. The usual block, however, is the lack of trained manpower.

US based IT consulting and service firm Amtex Systems today said it would invest Rs six crore for expanding operations of its Indian subsidiary.In addition to its BPO facility in the city, the company would set up a 4,000 sq ft processing centre with a seating capacity of 150, a statement here said.

Indian business process outsourcer Genpact said Monday that it has acquired a back office services delivery center in Guatemala City from GE Money, a division of General Electric GE.Genpact, which already has a delivery center in Mexico, said that the newly acquired facility in Guatemala will extend Genpacts presence in the region, and increase its ability to provide business process services in English as well as in Spanish. Genpact will provide services to GE Money from the facility, it added.

Global consultancy services provider KPMG and Nasscom today indicated that the Financial Services industry KPO knowledge process outsourcing is poised to be worth USD5 billion in India by 2010. In a report brought out jointly and released by the Union IT and C Minister, A. Raja, KPMG researchers indicated that while there are various projections of KPO industry that range between USD10 billion and USD17 billion by 2010, India is well poised to garner about USD5 billion worth of financial services business.

Sitel reportedly has been selected by a global travel management company to provide business process outsourcing services. Officials from Sitel said they were selected by the new client for their ability to standardize operations, improve processes and increase efficiencies across five international brands. The contract is worth about USD30 million, over three years.
