New area to explore in KPO business

The growth story of knowledge process outsourcing industry in the state is witnessing a new subplot. Architectural designing outsourcing has seen new players entering into the segment in the state. Domestic architectural designing units, on the other hand, are also upgrading their facilities and infrastructure and equipping themselves with the latest technology to participate in the process. Armed with the latest software and growing offshore demands, architectural design KPOs are making their clientbased in the US, UK and Middle East happy with their service. Rupee appreciation and crunch of skilled human resources notwithstanding, these firms have been holding up to the difficult times.

Spanco to invest in Indian BPO business

Telecom system integration company Spanco Telesystems and Solutions has forayed into the domestic BPO segment with an initial investment of Rs 400 crore. Known as Spanco BPO, the new venture has set up two flagship customer support centres in Gurgaon and Mumbai to provide back office services to domestic clients, the company said in a release.

Barclays plans Indian captive unit

UK based Barclays Bank plans to set up a captive unit in India. The banks third party BPO partner Intelenet is setting up a 1,000 people BPO centre for the bank in Noida. Barclays, however, will still continue outsourcing to Intelenet, which currently does work for Barclays processes from its Mumbai centre, according to industry sources. The Noidabased BPO unit is being built on a Build Operate Transfer BOT basis. The BPO unit will be transferred to Barclays in a few months time, though the timeline is not yet clear.

Genpact completes Axis acquisition

Genpact, a firm managing business processes for companies around the world has announced its acquisition of Axis Risk Consulting Services. Axis is an independent Mumbaibased risk consulting firm. It provides risk assurance services, including internal audit, business performance improvement, SarbanesOxley documentation and compliance testing, and enterprise risk management. Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

Indian BPO revenues to increase

The annual revenue of Indian ITeS BPO industry is expected to rise by more than USD10 billion by FY10 from the current fiscal levels, notwithstanding the concerns over rupee appreciation and competition from countries like China and Philippines. According to a new study by international research and consultancy firm Dun and Bradstreet, the Indian ITeS BPO industry would reach a revenue of 23.7 billion by FY10 against an estimated USD12.9 billion in FY08.

Wipro eyeing MNC BPO unit

Here is another blockbuster deal which is waiting to be lapped up. Intelenet and Blackstone seem to have joined the race to acquire Dells non US BPO business, which is on the block.Interestingly, even as Dell maintains that it was not contemplating any such move, sources said that Intelenet which was recently acquired by Blackstone and Blackstone itself as a standalone buyout fund have evinced interest in acquiring the unit. Besides, these two, the other names going around in the market are Wipro and Accenture which have shown interest to acquire the PC makers unit.

Cerebra looks at BPO acquisition

Cerebra Integrated Technologies Limited, an information technology firm, has identified the BPO and the Architectural Design segment as potential growth generators and charted out aggressive plans in both the segments. The company is currently on the scout for acquisitions in the BPO sector and is in the process to shortlist such firms involved in the architectural, KPO business. It intends to buy small to mid sized firms in India and USA. The company plans to invest in building 200 seats strong BPO business globally.

NCO Group buys Outsourcing Solutions for USD 325M

Outsourcing Solutions Inc. OSI, a leading provider of business process outsourcing services, and specializing in accounts receivable management services, today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by NCO Group, Inc. NCO, based in Horsham, Pennsylvania. NCO is a global provider of business process outsourcing services. The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008, and is subject to OSI stockholder approval, certain adjustments and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions including governmental approvals.

Indian BPO firm acquires British BPO

Hero Group has acquired British BPO and call centre company Dalglen for Rs 320 crore. Dalglen has a large presence in Scotland. It is one of the largest call centres in Europe and in the UK.Hero group is planning to grow its BPO services into an international operation through this acquisition, say sources. Hero group which has a strong presence in the automotive space in India thanks to Hero Honda will be looking to utilise synergies at both ends through this acquisition, sources add.

KPO provider Zenta in acquisition mode

Integrated business and knowledge process outsourcing services provider Zenta is set to expand its operations in India with one more centre in Chennai and the addition of another facility in Pune. The US company is poised to add about 1,200 seats in these two centres to the existing 5,000 people and is also scouting for acquisitions.

Infosys looking for Aviva BPO

IT major Infosys is learnt to be eyeing UK based Avivas offshoring centres in Bangalore and Colombo as well as its two Pune facilities that are currently operated by WNS and EXL under the build tooperate totransfer BOT model. The deal is expected to be in the range of USD 75 to 80 million. The Colombo and Bangalore units are now run by Aviva Global Services AGS,Avivas global BPO and IT offshoring arm. The two Pune facilities were to be transferred to AGS in January 2008. But Aviva, UKs largest insurance provider, recently deferred its decision to repossess the centres by a quarter to April 2008.

The growing importance for KPO services

As the USD8.4 billion Indian ITeSBPO exports industry braces itself to touch the USD24 billionmark by 2010, according to Nasscom, smaller players may not be a part of the party. The BPO game is all about volume, opines Anish Zavery of KPMG. He adds, In order to survive the smaller players will have to provide very niche services which add value to a company's business, on the lines of a KPO.However, smaller companies in the knowledge process outsourcing space may not be able to survive this wave of consolidation in the industry either.

Intelenet Global Services Pvt Ltd Intelenet announced the acquisition of a company in Mauritius which owns two global companies, Upstream, a global BPO company and Travelport ISO, the India based captive operations part of the Travelport group, a global travel services company. This is Intelenets first major step in its aggressive inorganic growth strategy, which was set in motion following the management buy,out backed by Blackstone in June 2007.

Indian BPO, vCustomer expands

BPO services provider vCustomer Corporation today said it will raise its India headcount by at least 35 per cent from the existing 3,500 staff by the year 2008. The company, which plans to serve large corporates in India through its customer management solutions, would hire people for both its existing as well as newly set up centres.
