The Indian BPO sector is experimenting with assembly line type of job allocation as they are facing huge talent crunch. This means they are breaking up wholesome work into some non specialized parts processes demarcated step by step.
This step is seen as a response to the talent crunch. Also it is expected to check attrition as individually no employee will be able to hold wholesome experience on a particular process and thus employability in other sectors is greatly decreased. The trend has not caught so much stam yet but if scaled up, it may throw up an opportunity for vey low skilled peoples to become the backoffice for BPO operationsand this could help the BPO industry spread to tier II and III towns where smaller tasks can be offshored.
The BPO industry in India is currently entirely centered around metro cities which account for over 90 percent of the operations. Offshoring within India would capitalise on the vast rural and school dropout population. There are 30 million 12th pass people in rural India who could be part of the rural BPO revolution. Generally non voice and data entry activities can be easily offshored.
Pilots projects on this issue are being conducted in rural areas by GramIT,Comat Technologies. Though question of repetition and monotonous nature of the work is also been raised but employability of non technical persons cant easily be shrugged off and also there is furher possibility of reskilling the work force.
