INDIA: Offshoring of Publishing work to grow

Indians contribute to an expanding media sector outside of India. The publishing industry is expected for a healthy growth in future, especially in the outsourcing arena. A study on the subject states that the publishing sector in India will be worth $1.46 billion by 2010 at an estimated growth rate of 35%. This is a sharp increase from the current revenue of $440 million. Also the sector is likely to employ 74,000 people in the next three years.

Publishing offshoring revenues have grown faster than number of jobs generated in this sector. As estimated earlier of 35% manpower growth per annum, it actually grew at about 31% to reach 26,000 in 2006 and the revenues grew by over 45%.

This demonstrates the increasing level of automation and shift to higher value services. Companies are rapidly adding high-end service capabilities and this will enable them to bill higher rates in an era of intense competition, margin pressures and rupee appreciation.

At the moment there are over 100 players of various sizes in this sector in India. Together they employed around 26,000 people in 2006. SPi, OfficeTiger, Macmillan India, Newgen, Integra, Infomedia, Infomedia and Aptaraare some of big players in India.

The range of offshored services being done from India includes: editorial, data operations, design and IT. Each of these has achieved varying levels of offshoring maturity. The study says in the Indian offshoring space, the strongest capability is within the operations space, followed by editorial services.

Based on its thorough primary research and analysis, clients have identified a list of frontrunners, who have the potential to emerge as winners within their chosen slots. A vast majority, or approximately 96% of the India-based vendors have capabilities to service the academic publishing segment. While around 39% of the vendors have the capability to handle educational publishing and legal publishing respectively.  Interestingly industry experts feel that though bulk of the work will move to the larger vendors, but small vendors will also flourish, when helped by sub-contracting from larger vendors."
