Database Design-Outsourcing
I am currently negotiating a deal with some North American customers on outsourcing of database design services. I strongly feel that the Logical data model has to happen in thelocation where the Business Analyst is. IN most cases, teh Business Analysts are based in North America. However, my strong belief is, the physical data model can be done from India irrespective of where the Business Analyst or the Project design team is. Is this a good idea and what does the group think?

Benefits of Outsourcing
Most companies probably accept at least some level of IT outsourcing as a business necessity. Other enterprises embrace IT outsourcing as a critical component to a larger business strategy. Whether a company considers selective or enterprise-wide IT outsourcing, the benefits are both compelling and real.
These potential benefits can include:
• Reduced IT overhead and capital expenses
• Improved IT performance and systems reliability
• Accelerated development and time-to-market cycles to support core business operations
• Smoother, less costly technology migrations and upgrades
• Enhanced business contingency and continuity plans
• Increased effectiveness of scarce in-house IT resources
Achieving the benefits described above requires simplicity, accountability, and trust.
Simplicity, in that the outsourcing processes are clear, well defined and tied to business objectives. Accountability, in that the people who manage the processes are judged by the results. And trust, in that the promised results are consistently delivered.
Outsourcing will allow you to:
• enjoy more resources and better support
• gain real internal flexibility and control
• drive better decision making and reach your strategic goals
• release time for key activities like sales
• safeguard your competitive edge
• access new technologies and expertise
• improve processes and systems, based on independent and non-political advice

Transparency is crucial as it provides a single view of the services on offer and the projects being support¬ed. And creates the atmosphere in which a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship can flourish.
Governance
No contract or starting point will remain static. Hence, structured and effective governance of
the service, service levels, key personnel and a host of other critical issues require ongoing
management and constant re-alignment. Metrics drive the process. Quality and alignment are crucial. Objective communication to stakeholder groups is a significant contributing factor to project success or failure. Our experience in establishing effective governance structures
and processes can be the difference between a sustainable service and a visible failure.
Unfortunately, the latter state represents the majority.

Trade publishers and outsourcing: What do they think?
Trade publishing is the most commercially focused category among all publishing industry segments. Trade books are targeted for the general consumer and are sold through channels like bookstores, libraries and wholesalers. The target consumers of trade books range from children to adults and include a variety of works ranging from fiction and nonfiction with hardcover or paperback books.
It is difficult to estimate the exact contribution of trade publishing to the overall publishing industry. A significant portion of 'other' in the above exhibit is contributed by trade publishing. We estimate that the size of trade publishing industry (English language) could be anywhere between USD 30 to USD 45 billion in 2008.
The trade publishing segment has been an early adopter of the digital media. The pressures that publishers faced in the wake of economic recession stimulated the e-book market. In the US alone, trade wholesale electronic book sales amounted to USD 167 m according to the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). The e-book segment is growing and has witnessed serious attempts by publishers to make it a strong revenue source.
Outsourcing by Trade publishers
Trade publishers have been outsourcing parts of their functions for over a decade, not just as means to tackle cost pressures, but also as part of their business model. The exhibit below represents the responses of respondents that have rated the challenges they face in their publishing business vis-à-vis effective solution/mitigation via outsourcing. This is based on a comprehensive survey of publishers conducted recently by us.
The challenge to adapt to new technology can be very effectively dealt with by outsourcing, as indicated by the responses. Trade publishers also consider outsourcing to be highly effective to address lack of in-house capability. Addressing new geographies is also considered to be a constraint that outsourcing can mitigate very effectively.
Cost and margin pressures can be successfully mitigated by outsourcing, yet not all respondents believe so. Diversifying into new areas of business and providing value-addition within current offerings is another area where outsourcing is yet to be viewed as a complete solution.
In spite of the pressures, current level of servicing does not offer publishers a strong reason to outsource. Outsourcing for cost arbitrage and value-addition has not been successfully mitigated while outsourcing. Interestingly, a small percentage of respondents feel that outsourcing cannot mitigate any challenges!
This article is based on the report “What do Trade publishers think about outsourcing”.

Increased activity in the LPO industry
Wednesday, 21 April 2010
While the downturn is reshaping the legal services landscape; the LPO industry is witnessing increased activity. Revenues from the offshore legal services industry were $320 million for 2008 and are expected to reach $440 million by end 2010. The industry seems to be picking up pace much faster as the global economy recovers.
Increasing level of interest
While contracts in the LPO segment are not largely publicized, our discussions with buyers and LPO service providers indicate the growing awareness and interest level of law firms and corporations with respect to outsourcing and offshoring legal services.
* Recently, Microsoft signed a contract with Integreon for legal support services. Integreon will provide contract review and offshore document review services to the software giant from its India and Fargo centers.
* Early this year, Microsoft also announced its plan to send routine legal work to CPA Global.
* British Telecom recently announced its decision to shift work from its captive legal services center (located in India) to UnitedLex.
The established service providers have witnessed long term contracts in the last six to eight months. Last year, Rio Tinto, a leading international mining group based in the UK awarded a contract to CPA Global. Rio Tinto offshored contract review and drafting, legal research and document review to CPA Global. Similarly, Integreon won a seven year contract worth £50 million from UK based law firm Osborne Clarke. Integreon will provide knowledge and information management; technology and business intelligence services; transcription, secretarial, and word processing services to the law firm.
On the supply side…service providers gearing up
On the supply side, the growing interest levels are pushing LPOs to focus on building expertise and scaling up their onshore and offshore presence (by way of organic and inorganic growth and strategic partnerships).
Acquisition is a relatively easy way to build scale. Tie-ups are simpler than acquisitions (or mergers) as they can be put into action without the operational and legal complexities of takeovers. Moreover, they are short-term and can serve as a testing ground for certain types of markets or services. Some of the larger companies prefer to grow through acquisitions while there are others who are exploring possibilities of a strategic tie-up or partnership.
Several LPO service providers have formed partnerships to complement their capabilities in technology, platforms and strengthen their onshore presence. For instance,
* LawScribe entered into a strategic partnership with IQWEST (an e-discovery support company)
* Bodhi Global partnered with a US based document review service provider
* Tricom entered a strategic partnership with Hobs Legal Docs, a UK based reprographics service provider.
In the long run, service providers are likely to focus not only on specialized skills but also on scale. The established players already employ more than 200 people and expect to add capacity in the next two years. While the objectives might vary - acquiring domain specific capabilities, expanding or strengthening their service offerings, getting access to new markets and technology to building scale - there is more action in store for the LPO industry in the near future.

Adoption of CIMS in the BPO/ITES space
ITES/BPO service includes a situation or a scenario wherein one company outsources a part of its work to another company. The vendor or partner to whom the entire process is outsourced is responsible for the implementation and execution of the outsourced business process through the telecom and Internet medium under strict guidelines regarding requirements and specifications from the outsourcing company. An ITES service provider or vendor handles varied tasks for its outsourcing partner.
Customer interaction plays a very important role in the BPO/ITES industry. Some of the ITES/ BPO service providers handle millions of customer contacts per month. Examples of such interactions include customers calling in to register complaints regarding services offered by the outsourcer, customers calling in to check order status and to check information on products and services etc…
To handle such interactions and other multiple functions as well as back office tasks, BPO’s face various issues. BPO’s are also facing a stiff competition continuously both in the international as well as domestic arena. Customers of BPO’s are demanding an ever- increasing array of technology products and services while still expecting highest levels of quality and service delivery.
According to NASSCOM, the Indian ITES-BPO industry has entered into the Phase II of evolution (i.e. moving from potential to performance). Indian ITES-BPO organizations have now started looking beyond contract fulfillment to identify opportunities for delivering high quality service to end-customers hence focusing on long term growth. They are aligning internal systems and technology teams to ensure high customer satisfaction.
BPO service providers are therefore feeling the need to manage every single interaction with the customers and maintain a database simultaneously. Most of the service providers have started leveraging technology and innovation to come up with a (Customer interaction management) CIM solution customized according to the client requirements. Since the cost of acquiring a new customer is always higher than the cost of retaining an old one, so it is indispensible to implement a customer relationship management strategy, the CIM way.
Earlier, in an outsourced project, a traditional BPO service provider made use of the CRM solution or related application provided by the client to handle customer interactions. A modern BPO on the contrary, uses a CIM solution integrated with multiple channels. This provides a 360 degree interaction capability irrespective of the channel being used. Cross trained agents work seamlessly to resolve customer queries and handle customer interactions not only by phone but also by email, chat and SMS on 24/7 basis.

From assembly lines to workflows – Automation makes business sense
Margins and volumes play a central role in determining the future of a business.
The first organized attempt to achieve higher volumes through automation was done by none other than Henry Ford. He helped many consumers realize their dream of switching from raw horse power to brake horse power. As a visionary, he knew what mass production could do to consumerism & consumerism to the overall business. Ironically, it’s this same logic which BPOs have now embraced to significantly make a difference with their consumers – the buyers.
Assembly lines in the manufacturing industry have been converted to today’s workflow/workforce management tools, in the BPOs, which ensure maximum productivity translating into higher volumes at a lesser cost. The numbers geek has given way to highly mature business intelligence tools. Hosted applications like On Demand Call Centers allow you to run your business right away without trying to re-invent the wheel while work from home applications take your business right to the employee’s door-step. Evolution of business seems to have no limits and those pushing the limits are the ones defining the new business landscape. Buyers, no longer want to be associated with vendors having a non-existent rigor for innovation. Vendors who continue to stick their head in the sand will be reduced to non-entities in the long run.
Indian service providers fortunately have risen up to this challenge and are fast adopting and developing new tools and techniques to further automate their client’s processes. No wonder – many of their global counterparts are feeling the heat.

Life of a BPO employee
I know, by seeing the title of the blog most of us will be divided in two halves...The ones who consider the life in BPO as hell...and the others who would say its "Rocking"...
However friends, here I want you all too see this from my perspective...at micro level..
I have been working for BPOs for say about eight years now.. worked in Mumbai, gurgaon and now in Noida.
Life, I feel is now moving between weekend to weekend. Everything is so programmed, so monotonous...Even the weekends have become like rituals, having a party on friday night, getting up late on saturday, dragging myself,,and the spouse for the breakfast, heading towards a mall, shopping (without any planning), eating (without any will), going for a movie, and then back to home. After this, I feel guilty of spending once again, above the limits. But guys what are we suppose to do...Our parents had so many friends, old and regular friends whom they use to visit on sundays or they use to come to our place. Now, do we have any such friends?? NO...coz we keep changing the jobs every six months or so...
Our parents feel that we are very happy as we are earning so much ..that too at this young age...but what they dont know is the "Hell" we are going through.. no job security, no finanicial security, nothing man...the future seems so doomed...

The energy of the fabric design
Design plays a crucial role in the success of today's Web site. Without adequate web design, all web pages are dull not to mention the drill. Doesn’t matter if it is a personal website or a company, web design t is a necessity especially now, when the Internet is at its peak of evolution.
Nobody wants to browse a Web page full of text, because let 's face it, it ' s absolutely boring When creating a Web site, the developer has to implement the components of the Web site that will make visitors come back and visit again. The perfect way to do this is using the material and design makes the site attractive, casual, and popular.
The flash represents the major parties in fabric design, without it, the Internet wouldn’t be as popular as it is today. The flash makes everything possible: the attractive design, catchy animations, music, videos, games and the list could be lit forever. Flash is considered the new wave; one reason for this is represented by the fact that with the help of flash websites are users interactive, making them much more interesting than the regular Web site where everything is adaptable predefines without any real options.
When low to multimedia, making videos for example, Flash movies can be stored in small file sizes, so they can be transferred quickly is an important advantage because nobody wants to wait minutes to load a page completely. Of course, there is a drawback to all this, too graphics, videos, sounds slow loading time and we all know, but patience is a virtue, most of we’t we have it.
Web design plays an important role in successful marketing. With an attractive web site is guaranteed success. A company with professional web site benefit from the advantages of web design has to offer. Is Internet marketing is all about getting as many visitors as possible unless also capture the interest of the visitor once he is in that specific Web site, so what better way you do this if not by design fabric?
Companies offer web design professional services for business companies that want to really make an impression on the web. You can talk about a company just by viewing their Web site which is why companies increasingly hire web designers to create a professional Web site that stands out from other sites.
Naturally, a Web site, is theoretically about the content but he 's face it, without the attractive design, few people will be curious about the content itself. You can say, it 't judge a book by its cover but this is not applicable in the area of the Web site because it falls a simple question: What Web site reminds you again and again? The answer is quite obvious, which is fine with the graphics, those with visual aura that draw your attention to the first click.
For companies looking for a fast growing professionally designed Web site is the key. There are numerous examples of companies that after you adjust your Web site enjoyed a large growth in its domain of activity, improving their success.
In conclusion, web design is about marketing, because making your website look more attractive will give a boost to big business, or if you have a personal Web page you will enjoy watching the numbers of traffic certainly rise.

Outsourcing Association to be founded in Central and Eastern Europe.
Budapest – 21 October, 2008 - Outsourcing Associated bodies and Branch Associations from the Baltics, Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania consolidate their resources and established Central and Eastern European Outsourcing Association (CEEOA) with the purpose to promote CEE region as competitive alternative to other Global offshoring destinations, and to increase services delivery quality and volumes under recognized standards.
Central and East European (CEE) countries are very small players in the Global market for IT and business process outsourcing. Lack of international trade practice and modern business management competencies by CEE vendors are among the factors keeping CEE region from realizing considerable opportunities created by globalization.
Therefore CEEOA strives to attract considerable attention to the region as an offshore outsourcing location, along with thousands of qualified graduates entering the marketplace each year. Service providers in these countries offer geographic proximity combined with cultural and language affinities, constantly improved business viabilities and services delivery capabilities, and openness to collaborate. The macro economical and political environment is stable, infrastructure is well developed.
Baltic Outsourcing Association (BOA), Ukrainian HI-TECH Initiative, Hungarian Outsourcing Association (HOA), Employers’ Association of the Software and Services Industry (ANIS) from Romania and Bulgarian Web Association (BWA) joined their forces with the purpose to best avail opportunities given by globalization and promote CEE region‘s competitive features in order to capture large share of the global market for IT and business process outsourcing (offshoring) services. CEEOA focus is on all service areas, not only IT, BPO and high tech industries, as its important to consider outsourcing as a non industry specific phenomenon. CEEOA is an open platform for all the organizations and businness associations in the region who are willing to join it or to contrubute to the accomplishment of its goals.
CEEOA operates as an independent professional advisory body on networking partnership basis, - its critical Objective is to create, develop and communicate positive image and main value proposition (-s) of CEE region as competitive alternative to other global IT, business processes and manufacturing outsourcing destinations.
The Association also strives to develop the internal market, where outsourcing should be promoted as a useful management tool for companies ranging from different industries in CEE region. Other Objectives are: to promote transparent and open business environment, CEE regional and international networking that builds operational value by promising and delivering high quality products and services at fair prices over the time, and by building strong economic, technical and social ties among the members of CEEOA and free competition; to improve business viabilities and services delivery capabilities of CEE Service providers; to promote creation and introduction of science-intensive technologies, the development of information society; to encourage each CEE country to increase the level of collaboration between government, companies, and universities to ensure that students gain the skills that companies require.
CEEOA intends to achieve these Objectives with the use of different marketing communication tools as PR, ATL and BTL activities, and the establishment of standardized certifications of Vendors‘ qualification. Besides initiating permanent researches to follow the main indicators of outsourcing, political, economic, and investment market features, Association wishes to maintain value added relationship network with associated outsourcing industry bodies, chambers of trade and industry and professional associations globally, while creating a single information flow promoting and sharing the best practices, expert information and research findings, benefits and innovative solutions in the outsourcing industry from CEE.
Central and Eastern European Outsourcing Association has already accomplished the project ITONews.eu (http://itonews.eu) – information platform, the main aim of which is to create the single information flow from CEE countries and to serve as a meeting place for outsourcing services providers and buyers. Also a brief research “Central and Eastern Europe IT Outsourcing Review ‘2007” has been conducted under the aegis of CEEOA, where the information about IT Outsourcing markets of CEE countries can be found.
About CEEOA

Central and Eastern Europe IT Outsourcing Review 2008: Central and Eastern Europe strengthen their position on the IT outsourcing market
23 July, 2009 – Kiev – The research “Central and Eastern Europe IT Outsourcing Review 2008” provides an evidence of the rapid development of IT outsourcing services market in the Central and Eastern Europe. The CEE cluster becomes the real player on the global outsourcing market. The clients are getting more interested in the “nearshoring” to the CEE region than in the offshoring to India or China. The customers become more sophisticated in their business relationships. There has been a shift from simple cost savings as a motivation to valuing the experience of outsourcing services providers and efficiency of cooperation between the client and provider teams. The advantages of the CEE countries such as cultural compatibility with Europe and North America, technical and business experience are of great value for the clients.
One of the main objectives of the research conducted by the Central and Eastern European Outsourcing Association (CEEOA) with the support of Council of European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS) is to provide the holistic view on the potential of the CEE region as a global cluster for provision of nearshore IT outsourcing for the Western European countries and for offshore IT outsourcing for the North American market.
“CEE IT Outsourcing Review” is conducted for the second time. The 2007 research report "Central and Eastern Europe IT Outsourcing Review 2007" indicated that there was a great interest from the clients consuming outsourcing services and research companies. Following positive feedback for the 2007 Report, the CEEOA decided to commission an annual review on “CEE IT Outsourcing Review”, resulting in this 2008 Report. “CEE IT Outsourcing Review 2008” was conducted during January to July 2009. The national IT and outsourcing associations, largest outsourcing companies, and independent experts were invited as respondents. The Ukrainian software development company NET Technology Center WEB100 (http://www.web100.com.ua), who provide offshore outsourcing services and deals with the development of IT solutions for B2B communications and business solutions based on Social Media approaches, sponsored the research.
The research examines key development indicators of the IT outsourcing market in the 16 countries of the Central and Eastern Europe region including market value, number of professionals, number of IT companies providing outsourcing services and market rates.
“CEE IT Outsourcing Review” includes the detailed country profiles, experts estimations on the outsourcing market development during the recession period, their opinion on new tendencies and forecasts for the market recovery, profiles of the leading outsourcing companies in the region.
Victor Maznyuk, President of Ukrainian Hi-Tech Initiative, one of the CEEOA founders, noted,
“Outsourcing industry in the Central and Eastern Europe does not suffer significantly during the financial crisis. At the outset of 2009 there was insignificant number of the outsourcing companies closures. The outsourcing industry always expected from the outsourcing players to meet the client requirements quickly and to control the expenses. Having a great experience of the development on the competitive market of outsourcing services provision, the Eastern European companies learned how to work successfully during the recession period without taking drastic measures and significant business changes.
As a whole, the crisis produced the effect of improvement in the industry. The number of IT specialists slightly increased, their salary and rental fee underwent insignificant drop. This allowed companies to reduce the cost of services and to be confident during the recession period. Without any doubt I can claim that outsourcing industry is ready for the increase of provided services value in view of the forthcoming economic recovery.”
The official version of the research “Central and Eastern Europe IT Outsourcing Review 2008” is available at the information portal ITONews.eu (http://www.itonews.eu) and at the CEEOA website.
