Indian technology giant Wipro said it would step up investments in the Middle East and hire more women to reinforce its commitment to a region now emerging as one of the companys most promising markets. Wipro, which launched its Middle East operations from Dubai in 2001, is committed to the region and to hiring more local talent, its chairman Azim Premji said on Tuesday. We had a phenomenal growth in the Middle East in 2008-09 at 170 per cent, and we expect to sustain our regional growth rate at 50 per cent in comparison with a market growth of six per cent, global turnover of $4.92 billion, and the company plans to enter new markets in the region.

HCL Technologies on Wednesday announced signing a global outsourcing deal with MTV Networks (MTVN) to develop and support its online media platforms. MTV Networks is part of media conglomerate Viacom and owns brands such as MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. The outsourcing engagement with HCL is aimed at supporting content delivery on the Internet. HCL and MTVN signed the deal in the October- December quarter last year. It was not disclosed when HCL will start generating revenues from the contract.

Top Australian banks Westpac and Commonwealth Bank plan to curb offshoring of back office and IT projects to India in an attempt to address local sentiments over a shrinking economy and rising joblessness . The banks are likely to demand that more projects be delivered onsite. Westpac, which is Australias biggest bank by market value, is evaluating outsourcing vendors for a contract estimated to be anywhere between $200 & 300 million, and is demanding that more work be delivered from Australia instead of shifting jobs to an offshore delivery centre in India or elsewhere.

According to independent sourcing advisory firm EquaTerra, Indian IT services firms such as Wipro and TCS are steadily increasing their profile and popularity among UK IT decision makers.The study found that all UK firms that offshore all or part of their IT function now use India as one of their offshoring locations, and plan to continue using this strategy.

Indias National Association of Software and Service Companies Nasscom said Tuesday that the countrys outsourcing industry can potentially earn revenue of US USD225 billion by 2020, of which about USD175 billion will come from exports, and the balance from the domestic market.The countrys revenue from outsourcing in the fiscal year to March 31 was about USD60 billion, of which USD47 billion was from exports, a Nasscom spokeswoman said.

India is the top choice for companies looking to outsource R and D with an offshoring business there expected to grow 23 percent to USD21 billion by 2012 and a talent pool in its largest hub, Bangalore second only to Silicon Valley, according to a study by a management consulting firm. The number of outsourced R and D centers in India has leapt from 180 in 2000 to 594 this year, according to the first report on Indias R and D centers from Zinnov . IT major Wipro has won an order worth Rs 2,500 crore from Unitech Wireless, to provide IT services to the fledgling mobile operator.The latest deal, which is considered among the biggest domestic IT contracts awarded till date, involves providing IT services and infrastructure to Unitech Wireless.It should be noted that Unitech Wireless, controlled by Norways biggest telecom company Telenor, has licenses to provide telecom services in all of the countrys 22 telecom circles, but is yet to start operations.
