Aditya Birla Minacs, a BPO venture of the Aditya Birla Group, has drawn up huge expansion plans in Kolkata. The company, which soft-launched its operations in the city in March and employs 450 people, will expand its headcount to 1,000 over the next five months. And not just that. Aditya Birla Minacs, which figures among Indias top 10 BPOs, is preparing a business plan which will see its headcount in Kolkata growing to nearly 5,000 people. This includes setting up a string of BPO facilities across the city as well as some 6 to 10 centres in some of the smaller towns in the state. It also plans to add more verticals in Kolkata from its present focus on telecoms.

UBS, Switzerlands biggest bank by assets, has sold its Indian back-office captive to multinational services firm Cognizant Technology Solutions for around USD75 million along with a five-year outsourcing contract worth up to USD442 million. The acquisition will strengthen Cognizants BPO practice and also help it expand its relations with UBS, an existing client.

Indias second-biggest software exporter, Infosys Technologies, plans to cross-sell its back-office services with the companys core banking product Finacle in order to gain more revenues from financial sector customers and also explore newer geographic markets.Infosys BPO, the USD300 million back-office services arm of the IT major, will align with Finacle, the banking solution business to provide its services to the latters customers.

Etisalat DB Telecom, a new entrant in the Indian telecom space yet to launch services, has awarded an end-to-end outsourcing contract to three BPO service providers Tech Mahindra, Aegis and Conflux.The deal, spanning over five years, is valued at over Rs 750 crore. Etisalat is a JV between the UAEb s Etisalat Group and Indiab s Dynamix Balwas Group with Etisalat holding 45% in the JV.

Telus International, the contact centre arm of Canadas second largest telco Telus Mobility, is planning to set up captive operations in the country. The company has identified a few people for senior positions in India. It is likely to recruit a few hundred people to begin with. The exact location and city has not yet been finalised, The Canadian operator is planning to set up back office functions from the captive and may also look at IT functions at a later date, he added.

Control of IsmartTimex, a Sri Lanka based outsourcing firm has been acquired by India's Aegis Limited, a unit of the Essar group, but a minority 20 percent stake will be held by local partners, the company said.Sri Lanka's Timex Garments had sold an 80 percent stake to Aegis' parent Essar Services Holdings Limited.

Animation and gaming are seen as the next wave in Indias successful outsourcing story. However, there is a major change, this is a sector which has moved up from outsourcing to co production, a move up the value chain from low end, less creative work to higher creativity and advanced technologies, says Krayon Pictures director Namrata Sharma. She said that for India to catch the animation bus, it needed to quickly provide the required manpower since Nasscom had projected that both animation and gaming were multi billion dollar opportunities for India. The usual block, however, is the lack of trained manpower.

Perot Systems is adding a new facility for business process outsourcing in Chennai in south India, citing strong business from the healthcare segment.BPO business from the healthcare segment has been relatively unaffected by the economic downturn, Manish Jain, head of corporate communications at Perot India, said. The facility is located in a special economic zone and by the rules governing these zones, it will have to work on new contracts from customers, Jain added.
